Its lineage carries the spirit of centuries of chile cultivation, from the indigenous traditions of the Americas to the spice routes that carried heat across oceans. Carolina Reaper held the title of the world's hottest pepper until 2023 when it was surpassed by its offspring Pepper X. Developed in South Carolina by Ed Currie in the early 21st century, its creation was a result of careful crossbreeding between a Nago pepper, likely a Bhut Jolokia variant, and a Red Habanero.
